Birgit Pfau-Effinger is Professor of Sociology and Research Director at the University of Hamburg, Germany, and Professor in the Dept. of Political Science and Public Administration of the University of Southern Denmark.

Her main research interests include the relationship between cultural change and welfare state change; explaining cross-national and historical differences in gender, care and the work-family relationship, historical development of cultural family models, and the changing relationship between formal and informal work.

She has published numerous articles in high-ranking academic journals, among others the British Journal of Sociology, British Journal of Industrial Relations, Community, Work & Family, Comparative Social Research, Environment & Planning, European Journal of Aging, Journal of Social Policy, European Societies, Journal of Aging Studies, International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy, Journal of Social Policy, Social Policy & Administration, and Work, Employment & Society, as well as several books with leading English-language publishers.

The German Research Council has included her in the database of outstanding women scientists 'AcademiaNet', since 2010.

One of her articles in Work, Employment and Society was distinguished in 2012 as 'Favorite WES article of the last 25 years' by the British Sociological Association.
